Biography

Unconfirmed Parents

Hildebrand (Hildeprand, Ildeprando), Duke of Spoleto, and Regarde of Bavaria.

The Abbey of Buchau was supposedly founded by Ato (Hatto/Otho) and his wife, Adalinde (Adelindis), who was the daughter of Hildebrand, duke of the Suevians/Swabians, and Regarde, duchess of the Bavarians, and sister of Hildegardis, the wife of Charlemagne. Ato and Adalinde, had four sons; Berginer, Reginold, Gerhard and Hatto. The account of the founding of the Abbey, also gives a five generation ancestry for Ato.[1]

There are serious chronological problems with aspects of this genealogy, according to the chronicle of Hermann of Reichenau, three of the four sons (Beringer, Reginolf et Gerhard) of Ato and Adalinde were killed in 902, yet Hildegard, her supposed sister married Charlemagne in about 770-772. Also none of the earlier generations can be confirmed with any other source.[1]

However, the historian and genealogist Hansmartin Decker-Hauff proposed that the Abbey of Buchau document had confused two different women named Adalinde. The wife of Ato, who would have lived in the ninth/tenth centuries, and another Adalinde from the eighth century who married Warin, an administrator of Alemannia. As there is no Hildebrand, duke of the Suevians in any record, he proposed that this was a meant to be Hilbrand or Hildeprand, duke of Spoleto, and he was the husband of Regarde, a sister of Odilo, duke of Bavaria. [1]

This would appear to be based on far too many unsourced proposals, and since his death, much of Decker-Hauff's theories have been discredited and he has even been found to have falsified some primary documents he relied on for his studies.[2]

Decker-Hauff does cite a source stating that . . . (rest of this statement needs to be entered).
